Toyota Revolutionizes Mobility, Wheelchairs Take a Stand

The Toyota Walk Me concept device offers users with walking difficulties features such as overcoming obstacles and moving more easily with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Today, developing technology is taking great strides towards making life easier for individuals who need assistance in various ways. Following the domestic WeWalk project introduced in previous years for people with visual impairments, Toyota has now unveiled a revolutionary device aimed at individuals with walking difficulties or the elderly.

The concept device, introduced as the Toyota Walk Me, is described as a chair with legs, but is primarily intended to provide ease for individuals experiencing walking difficulties or the elderly. The device can also be seen as an adaptation of Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot dog into a chair.

The device’s core slogan is stated as “Go Anywhere, Cool for Everyone!”, and it is designed in line with Toyota‘s “mobility for all” philosophy. The Walk Me moves with four robotic legs. These legs can overcome stairs, rocky paths, curbs, or uneven surfaces, and can automatically adjust the center of gravity according to the ground’s slope.

The Walk Me is not only designed for sitting. It also functions as a walker, capable of walking alongside the user. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can autonomously follow a predetermined route, detect environmental obstacles, and change direction.

Naturally, details on when this device, which is still in the concept stage, will enter commercial use or in which markets it will be available are not yet clear. Nevertheless, the proliferation of such devices in the next few years could be a significant step, especially for individuals with limited mobility.
